The Darling Story With Complete Description and Moral Lesson

The Darling Story With Complete Description and Moral Lesson:

"The Darling" (also known as "The Little Girl") is a short story by Anton Chekhov, a Russian playwright and short story writer. The story is about a woman named Olenka, who is known as "the darling" among her family and friends because of her endearing and loving nature.

The story begins with Olenka living with her father, an old and widowed school teacher. Olenka is content with her life, but she longs for love and companionship. One day, a new schoolteacher named Smirnin arrives in town and Olenka immediately becomes enamored with him. She begins to spend all her time with him, catering to his every need and desire. However, Smirnin becomes bored with Olenka and eventually leaves town, leaving her heartbroken.

After Smirnin leaves, Olenka becomes ill and her father dies. She then moves in with her sister and brother-in-law, who own a pharmacy. Olenka starts to help out in the pharmacy and she meets a new man, an engineer named Pustovalov. Olenka becomes infatuated with Pustovalov, and he quickly becomes the center of her world. However, Pustovalov too leaves Olenka alone and this time, she was left in a misery.

Olenka then becomes a governess to the children of a wealthy landowner, where she meets a third man, a doctor named Cheprakov. Olenka again becomes deeply in love with Cheprakov and caters to his every need. However, Cheprakov eventually leaves her as well, revealing that he is already married and had only used Olenka for his own pleasure.

In the end, Olenka is left alone with nothing but her memories of the men she loved. The story explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the search for meaning and fulfillment in life. The moral lesson from the story is that love and relationships based on sacrifice and idolization ultimately leads to unhappiness and self-abandonment, as well as the caution to not give up ourselves completely for anyone. Olenka's inability to stand for herself, and tendency to become subservient to the men in her life, ultimately led to her own unhappiness and isolation.
