The Cask of Amontillado Story

 The Cask of Amontillado Story         "The Cask of Amontillado" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1846. It tells the story of a man named Montresor who seeks revenge against a man named Fortunato, who has wronged him. The story takes place during carnival season in an unnamed Italian city. Montresor, who has a long-standing grudge against Fortunato, lures him into the catacombs beneath his palazzo by claiming to have acquired a cask of a rare wine, Amontillado, and needing Fortunato's expertise to determine its authenticity. Fortunato, an avid connoisseur, is easily persuaded and the two descend into the catacombs. Montresor, however, has no intention of bringing Fortunato back out, and as they walk deeper into the catacombs, he chains him to a rock wall and walls him up alive, leaving him there to die. The moral of the story is about the danger of seeking revenge. Montresor's desire for revenge consumes him and ultimately leads to Fortuna...
